Water Supply Outlook for Alberta

December 2008

Reservoir Storage Conditions

December 1, 2008 reservoir data is available in Table 1. Some data is not current as some gauges are routinely shut down for the winter.

As of December 1, 2008, water storage in the major irrigation reservoirs in the Oldman River basin was normal to above normal. Water storage in the basin was generally similar to this time last year, except much higher at the Oldman, Waterton and St. Mary Reservoirs. The Keho Lake and Travers Reservoir gauges have shut down for the winter, and water storage was below normal at that time. Travers Reservoir was below normal due to maintenance work.

Water storage as of December 1, 2008 in the major hydroelectric and irrigation reservoirs of the Bow River basin was normal to above normal. Water storage was generally similar to this time last year, but higher at Upper Kananaskis Lake.

Water storage in the major reservoir of the Red Deer River basin was above normal. Water storage in the Dickson Reservoir was similar to this time last year.

In the North Saskatchewan River basin, storage volume was below normal at Brazeau Reservoir and normal at Lake Abraham. Water storage was generally less than last year at this time at the Brazeau Reservoir.

In the Athabasca River basin, the storage volume is below normal in the Paddle River Reservoir and was normal at the South Heart Reservoir when the gauge shut down for the winter on November 1. Water storage in the basin is similar to last year at this time.
