On June 17, 2009, Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner awarded Brian Heidecker, Chair of the University of Alberta Board of Govenors, a $1.5 million provincial research grant. The University of Alberta School of Energy and the Environment received the grant to fund oil sands reclamation research.
