Energy Environment Technology Fund

The fund was established in 2006 by Alberta Environment and Alberta Energy Research Institute to fund projects that advance environmental friendly and energy efficient technologies for western Canada’s energy industry.

The program funds projects from these sources:

  • Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada’s steering committee on Technology for Emission Reductions and Eco-Efficiency,
  • Alberta Environment sponsored research projects, and
  • Environmental and energy efficiency projects to help meet the needs of the British Columbia-Alberta memorandum on research and development collaboration. For projects in this category, support from the British Columbia government must be obtained and the project must benefit the Albertan economy. Preferably, support from at least one industrial end user from Alberta should be obtained.

Fund Objectives

  • The research, development, demonstration and deployment of improved technologies, or methods that reduce emissions and / or increase energy efficiency;
  • Applied research, demonstration and deployment of new technologies that are necessary for the development of sound environmental policy for the energy industry. These would include:
    • studies that establish new benchmarks or industry standards;
    • studies that benchmark technology areas;
    • or studies that further the understanding of new technologies
  • Projects that help meet the needs of the BC-Alberta Memorandum on R&D collaboration, which includes a number of initiatives focused on environmental and energy efficiency projects.

Fund Mandate

The Energy Environment Technology Fund has aligned its goals to support the Alberta Energy Research Institute’s mission in the following four areas:

  • Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Support the development of a number of key technologies and protocols that in total will help the province of Alberta achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP by 2020.
  • Development and Deployment of Clean Coal/Carbon Technologies: Support the adaptation and development of the key technologies that can be incorporated in a clean coal/carbon demonstration plant by 2010 or in a fully commercial plant by the year 2020.
  • Application of Renewable Energy Production Technologies: Support the demonstration and commercial application of a number of renewal energy production technologies in Alberta that will provide 20% of province’s energy production by 2020.
  • Reduction of the Amount of Water Use in Energy Industry: Support the development of a number of key technologies that will result in a 50% reduction in fresh make-up water usage by the energy industry in Alberta by 2020.

A critical objective for Alberta Environment is the mitigation of environmental impact by Alberta’s energy industry while enhancing its sustainability.  Consequently, Alberta Environment looks to utilize the fund to support the development of Scientifically Sound Environmental Policies that would support environmental policy (guidelines, codes of practice, standards and regulations) relating to climate change, land reclamation/ remediation, air emissions, water quality/quantity and wastewater treatment.

Proposal Review Process

Projects are reviewed on a first come, first served basis, with no specific deadlines.

  • Initial contact with research coordinator
  • Fill out a prescreen form
  • Complete an application form by scoring your own project and justifying each criteria
  • Review of the application by Energy Environment Technology Fund Management Committee
  • Approved projects work with Alberta Energy Research Institute to develop a grant agreement

Application Tips

  • Give thorough explanation to each question, especially to the starred questions.
  • Each question is scored with a score of 1 to 4 – a high score is associated with a strongly affirmative answer and/or thorough support for the question.
  • Scores can be given in half increments. (e.g. 1, 1.5, 2…)
  • Attach CVs for all research team members
  • Use tables for laying out project work plan/milestones/deliverables
  • Attach letters of support from project partners

Budget and Level of Support

For fiscal year 2009-2010, EETF has a total budget of $500,000.  For each project, up to $50,000 per annum can be approved. However, funding is limited and projects that already have funding partners are preferred.

Annual Reports

The executive summaries for the approved projects from 2007-2008 are now available. To get an idea of the types of projects that EETF has approved, please see our Annual Reports.
