Environmental Protection Commission - Reports
Final report
In 2006 the Environmental Protection Commission released its final report, A Review of Alberta's Environmental and Emergency Response Capacity. The report provided recommendations on prevention of, and coordinated response to, environmental disasters in Alberta.
The Commission had earlier delivered a progress report to the Alberta Environment Minister, outlining the areas that the Commission would examine, particularly related to building capacity in Alberta to prevent and respond to environmental emergencies.
Formation of the commission was prompted by an oil spill and train derailment incident Lake Wabamun, west of Edmonton in 2005.
Review Alberta Environment’s emergency response system in order to identify recommendations for enhancement in preventing, mitigating, and responding to these incidents.
Review the provision of information required in a report to Alberta Environment, and the associated reporting process, regarding the products and substances involved in spills.
Review potential high-risk situations affecting Alberta’s lakes, rivers and other water bodies, as part of the government’s overall risk management strategy.
Review best practices for preventing, mitigating, and responding to these incidents.
