Central region

Covers more than 147,000 sq km, with diverse scenic landscapes, panoramic mountain views, rolling foothills, mixed wood aspen parkland/prairie, supporting a variety of flora and fauna. Major activities: oil and gas, coal mining and forestry industries in the west, and agriculture, power generation and petrochemical industries in the east. Largest major community is Red Deer.

Major rivers: Athabasca, North Saskatchewan and Red Deer River systems. Important recreational lakes: Lake Wabamun, Lac Ste Anne, Pigeon Lake, Sylvan Lake and Buffalo Lake.
