Northern region

Geographically diverse: Rocky Mountain foothills and eastern slopes in the southwest, vast stretches of boreal forest and permafrost areas in the north, reaching to the Alberta/Northwest Territories border. Large valleys include the Smoky, Peace, Athabasca and North Saskatchewan rivers.

Major population centres: Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Fort McMurray, Cold Lake, Grande Prairie and Peace River. Approximately 160 municipal water facilities, 189 municipal wastewater facilities, five approved landfills, 221 registered landfill facilities and three compost facilities serve the region. Industrial facilities: extensive refinery/manufacturing complexes (Edmonton area) and petrochemical/chemical complexes (Fort Saskatchewan area). Gas processing and power plants (primary and co-generation) throughout the region. Extensive mineable and in-situ oil sands resources (Fort McMurray and Cold Lake areas), agricultural land, hardwood/softwood timber, coal reserves, grazing land, water, wildlife, fish, recreational features, historical/archaeological resources.
